Rooney's Robert becomes Solo Bob

Rooney's gotten its share of good pub over the past few years, so it stands to reason that Rooney's Robert Schwartzman will do just as well with his new project, Solo Bob. It's a collection of songs that Bob has been writing all his life. The current plan looks to be one new song + video released about every three weeks.

the first is "The Victim"

btw, fans of Rooney shouldn't have anything to worry about as the band is still touring, this looks like it's just a quick solo thing for Schwartzman. Solo Bob's website (http://www.solobob.com/) seems to be having problems, but keep your eyes on it for more info.

my apologies for the lack of posts this week, the ft job was shortstaffed + snow = more work for me, so here's to catching up:
  • The Gulu Widows Group of Uganda gave Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes a nice treat by singing the band's song "Home" recently. ES&TMZ raised some money for the group at their release party back in July.
  • Aborted has a new lineup and a new 5 song EP that Century Media will be releasing digitally soon. There is word of a limited copy physical release, but no date yet.
  • IWrestledABearOnce has a new raffle contest up to get you onstage with them on tour.
  • A Day to Remember shot a new video for "I'm Made of Wax, Larry, What Are You Made Of?" and expect to have it begin airing on all your favorite webchannels in January.

Dylan's second Christmas video

2009 is becoming the Christmas season for Bob Dylan thanks to the second video released from his new Christmas album Christmas In The Heart, remember, every album purchased will donate money to Feeding America.

This video is for "Little Drummer Boy"

The video is pretty neat. Lots of great art and imagery. The people that created this video did a lot of work and it paid off. The song, well, I'm more of a fan of new Christmas songs, but as far as remakes go, it's Dylan and "Little Drummer Boy" is one of the better Xmas songs, although I'm pretty sure I left it off my top 25 Christmas Song Countdown (even though I like Beck and Mike Watt's versions).

Lots more snow at home, and somehow made it to work, but here's some more blips:
  • We Are The In Crowd are streaming "Never Be What You Want" at PureVolume.
  • Midnight Masses will be taking up residency at Union Pool in Brooklyn every Wednesday in February.
  • Silversun Pickups have been nominated for a Grammy, and will perform on Dec. 21 on The Tonight Show, Jan 26 on Jimmy Kimmel and will open for Muse on their US tour in March.
  • Alesana has made the second track from their new album availabel on RevolverMag, it's The Thespian.

Ike Willis is the legendary 10-plus year Zappa vocalist and guitarist whose career with Frank began in the role of "Joe" on the quintessential Zappa album, Joe's Garage. He toured with Zappa's band in 1978 and appeared on every Zappa tour thereafter; and almost every album until Frank Zappa's tragic early death. Ike played an integral role in Zappa's final tour in 1988, which some say was his most historic tour, and one that he richly represented to his fan base with several live recordings.

Ray White is a soul vocalist and rock and blues guitarist, best-known as a member of Frank Zappa's touring ensembles. He was drafted into Zappa's band in the fall of 1976, being featured on rhythm guitar and vocals, forming a memorable vocal harmony partnership with Ike Willis on later tours in 1980 and 1984. He participated on the albums Zappa in New York, Joe's Garage, Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are What You Is and more. Ray has also worked with jam-oriented groups like KVHW and Umphrey's McGee since his contributions to the Zappa band, and more recently, in summer 2007 Ray White joined Dweezil Zappa as a special guest for the Zappa Plays Zappa Tour.

Clare and the Reasons download, dates, live perfs

Clare and the Reasons have a very short round of dates for the West Coast in February lined up. In the meantime, check out a free download of the band's cover of "That's All" - IMO one of the best cover songs to be released in 2009. The tour will include support from Van Dyke Parks. And if you still want more, check out these two live perfs for Athens Soundies.

here's what the band's been saying about the lineup:

"Some things come along, like a sunny day after weeks of rain, or a good baguette, or a comfortable, yet good looking pair of shoes... That stuff is exciting, brings joy. When you find out you're touring with Van Dyke Parks, well, that's something entirely different.

The legendary musical genius will be playing some rare (as rare as a good baguette in a small US city) concerts of his very own songs - not anyone else's - his masterpieces. I'm assuming you will want to come to these shows,I know we would - wait, we are! Some Reasons will be joining Van Dyke on stage.

If the world is still a good and decent place, these tickets will go fast. Don't wait until the last minute, procrastinators will be missing out on goodness. Guest appearance by songwriting wunderkind Josh Mease.

We're so honored to be sharing this tour and making evenings filled with music with THE REAL VAN DYKE PARKS."

12/14 Brooklyn, NY - Knitting Factory w/ Keren Ann

2/9 Seattle, WA - The Triple Door w/ Van Dyke Parks
2/10 Portland, OR - Mississippi Studios w/ Van Dyke Parks
2/12 San Francisco, CA - The Swedish American Hall w/ Van Dyke Parks
2/14 (make out show!) Los Angeles, CA - McCabe's w/ Van Dyke Parks

more lunchtime musical madness
  • Dragged Into Sunlight has joined Prosthetic Records. Their next album, Hatred for Mankind (recorded by Tom Dring and Billy Anderson - Eyehategod, Neurosis, Weedeater) will be released in April. It's actually a rerelease of the band's 2009 Mordgrimm Records album and other than wider distribution, I don't know of any other reason to rebuy the album if you don't already have it.
  • New album dates from Domino Recording Co. include Lightspeed Champion's Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You on Feb. 1; Four Tet's There Is Love In You on Jan. 25
  • Therefore I Am is on a This Is New England tour for most of December.
