Since I've been running this site, I've learned about way more foreign born bands than I'd ever been previously exposed to. Amazing what this internet thing can do.
Fabrizio Cammarata is The Second Grace, boy if that doesn't sound holy..., he comes from Palermo on the island of Sicily but takes influences from as far away as South Africa and Cuba in his music.
This year, he will get his second album (TBA) released - sometime in fall - and he's got some name recognition to help him out. JD Foster produced (Calexico, Marc Ribot, Richmond Fontaine) and Calexico's own Joey Burns appears on the album, as does Jairo Zavala aka DePedro.
The official word is: The Second Grace sound evolved from a singer-songwriter ethos but gives more than a passing nod to lo-fi influences with its acoustic foundations, slide guitars, freaky percussion, accordion and fragile cello tones. Part of that colourful pattern no doubt comes from the colours and special atmosphere of the hometown Palermo, which itself has absorbed many cultural influences over the course of time to give it its own unique style. The same is true for The Second Grace.
The Second Grace is playing SXSW in a couple weeks, so if you're in Austin, check him out at the Hilton Garden INN March 19 @ 10 p.m.
