Music Producer / Engineer Joel Hamilton Joins Orphaned Children in Rural South Africa April 3 – 13th to Teach Basic Recording Techniques & Document Field Recordings for Charity Release
Joel Hamilton, producer / engineer whose credits include Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Blakroc, and Talib Kweli, has embarked on a journey to the rural Nkomazi region South Africa – home to the world’s highest prevalence of HIV - to teach basic recording techniques and collaborate on music with orphaned children.
Spearheaded by Hamilton through TRIAD Trust (Training to Reduce the Incidence of AIDS-Related Death) - a collective of musicians, artists, educators and health advocates dedicated to increasing HIV / AIDS awareness and prevention - Joel will engage children in the art of recording and music making, with the goal of inspiring them to lead positive lifestyles, and train staff members so they can continue recording the children.
TRIAD plans to raise money for the community through music collaborations with Joel and the children. More to come!
“I heard there as a 12 year-old girl who walked 5 weeks to visit this village. This community is incredibly poor; the average family makes about $1 per month,” says Hamilton, who will spend 10 days on-site. “There’s something intrinsically hopeful about the concept of being recorded or broadcast…having your voice lifted up and out of your situation, and presented for all the world to hear – that’s my real motivation for this project.”
