It's singles night & this week, I've got just the a-side to a 7"
Mean Creek - The Comedian by Old Flame Records
That's "The Comedian" the a-side to Mean Creek's new 7" on Old Flame Records.
Within seconds of this one opening up, I was immediately conjuring up comparisons to Tindersticks. Then, the song went well past what Tindersticks does, and became this deeply developed track with some of the same features as Tindersticks, only with more presence.
I ended up listening a couple of times, and still can't quite get enough. There's an aura of hard rock mentality there, and by hard rock, I mean when hard rock meant something (GNR, Motley Crue, etc).
A second (third, fourth, fifth) track would be wonderful here to capture more of what Mean Creek is doing, but based on "The Comedian," you'd be foolish not to look for something more to compliment this track.
And without getting into too many details, I did end up listening to this before I realized who produced this one, which says enough about this track anyway.

New Nellie McKay due Sept. 28
Singer-songwriter Nellie McKay's fifth album, 'Home Sweet Mobile Home,' will be released on Verve Records this September 28. Her second album for the label follows her 2009 release 'Normal As Blueberry Pie - A Tribute to Doris Day,' which was selected by The New York Times, Huffington Post and The Village Voice as one of the best of the year.
'Home Sweet Mobile Home' is McKay's first album of all-original material since 2007's 'Obligatory Villagers,' and has the musical wanderlust, lyrical playfulness and sharp point of view that has characterized her music since her breakthrough debut 'Get Away From Me.' Songs from the new project were recently debuted during her NYC engagement at Feinstein's, and the New York Post noted that "songs like "Bodega" and "Caribbean Time" feature whimsical humor and social commentary that blended in beautifully alongside the standards from the Blueberry Pie album."
The new album, produced by McKay and Robin Pappas, was recorded in Los Angeles, New York, Jamaica and the Pocono Mountains and, even more than her previous albums, combines diverse musical moods and cultures.
"I have no idea how this album happened," says Nellie. "I guess I was looking for a sound to reflect our shrinking world and the bleed of culture crossing all kinds of borders." Reviewing a recent McKay show, Stephen Holden from The New York Times described her as a "vocal chameleon," and that varied musical palette is used to great effect on the 13 songs on 'Home Sweet Mobile Home.'
McKay has released four critically acclaimed records and appeared on Broadway (winning a Theatre World Award for her role in the revival of 'The Threepenny Opera') and on film (acting and singing in 'P.S. I Love You'). She also wrote and performed the song score for the Rob Reiner film 'Rumor Has It.'
The Chase Brock Experience recently produced a ballet of her third album, 'Obligatory Villagers,' while Nellie is currently playing opposite violin prodigy Philippe Quint in the independent film 'Downtown Express' and contributing to the soundtrack for the upcoming Martin Scorsese HBO series 'Boardwalk Empire.'

John Mayer’s fourth album, Battle Studies, debuted at #1 in November 2009 and has since achieved platinum status. The album kicked off a world tour last February that sold out arenas across the country and earned the musician some of the best performance reviews of his career. The New York Times wrote, “Mr. Mayer is an astonishing blues guitarist, both in his technical gifts and in his ability to make those gifts appear accessible.” Rolling Stone declared, “It was an impressive display of his sharp guitar playing, appealing sing-alongs and personable wit, and the audience responded generously.”
“John’s success today is a continuation of a love affair he began with his fans on a home-grown level as an independent touring artist back in 2000,” Michael McDonald of Mick Management, in a recent Billboard interview. “He built, and remains close to, a loyal group of fans. There's always been a sense that ‘we're doing this together’ and that remains.”
This summer, Mayer has earned his tenth Top 5 track with “Half of My Heart,” which is shaping up to become one of his biggest radio hits to date. The single is already on 227 stations with 22.3 million in audience while digital sales of the song have increased each week for the past twelve weeks.
“Half of My Heart” will be featured during Mayer’s Today Show Summer Concert, which will air live from Rockefeller Plaza in New York City on Friday, July 23rd. His Summer Concert on Today is one of several special performances this summer.
On July 20th at The Kennedy Center in Washington DC , Mayer will both speak and perform at a free event celebrating Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser's cross-country journey to meet with arts leaders to discuss strategies for dealing with the economic recession. On August 28, Keith Urban and John Mayer’s summer tour plans intersect as the two renowned guitar players perform a special show together at The Gorge in George , WA .
This summer, JM has again enlisted the support of non-profit organization, Reverb, to take steps towards environmental sustainability on the road. His AKOG (Another Kind of Green) branded eco-village will be set up in each venue's concourse, along with military group NCIRE. Additionally, fans will be selling wristbands on behalf of M.O.M. (the Military Outreach Ministry) to raise money for the organization while showing their support of John. For more information, visit www.ncire.org and www.mom4usa.org.

Darren Hanlon touring with Billy Bragg
Sydney, Australia-based Darren Hanlon’s I Will Love You At All, written in a variety of exotic locations from Paris to Coonabarabran, Australia and recorded at Portland, Oregon’s famed Type Foundry studio, speaks a language born of wanderlust.
The record, recorded by Adam Selzer (M Ward, She & Him, The Decemberists), features Rachel Blumberg (Bright Eyes, M Ward, She & Him, The Decemberists) on drums, as well as longtime Portland-based collaborator Cory Gray (Carcrashlander, Norfolk and Western) on keys, was created away from Hanlon’s native home, and was partially written in the studio—a departure for the artist. Reinforcing the album’s sweet nature are more of Portland’s finest—dual female vocalists Shelley Short and Alia Farah.
With an EP, four studio albums, and a CD collection’s worth of B-sides and rarities to his name, Darren has built a loyal Australian fan base, but will be new to many in the ‘States. Hanlon has toured with Billy Bragg, Violent Femmes, and Evan Dando, and completed five tours at home and abroad with his friends The Magnetic Fields. Darren is also responsible for bringing Jeffrey Lewis, David Dondero and Jens Lekman to Australia for their first visits in support of his own sold out shows.
As always, Darren’s eye for life’s smaller details are played out with charm and joyful abandon on I Will Love You At All. From the light-fingered bounce of ‘Butterfly Bones’ to the evocative and plaintive ‘Modern History’, these songs mainline to the heart. There’s Darren’s first stab at an epic - ‘House’ clocks in at 7.39 minutes - and his most down-home country shuffle yet, ‘If Only My Heart Were Made Of Stone’, followed by the haunting closer of ‘What Can We Say?’. This full-length is Hanlon creating at his most relaxed, with a more heightened folk sensibility—they are tales of being, as Hanlon puts it, “cut adrift from the world.” They are songs about houses he’s lived in, his hometown, memories both crisp and faded, all created on the other side of the globe. At each intimate turn, I Will Love You At All is an album rich with the open spirit in which it was created.

Ariel Pink has new dates to see you
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti's 4AD debut record, Before Today, consists of twelve tracks (including the single "Round And Round") and was released worldwide on June 8th 2010 on CD, LP and digital formats.
Six months in the making, Before Today was recorded in part in Encino at the House of Blues (once Tito Jackson's home studio) with Sunny Levine (Quincy Jones' grandson) and Rik Pekkonen (Bill Withers, Seals & Crofts, Bread) as well as at the band's home studios. The result is a beguiling mix of glam rock, West Coast funk and Merseybeat harmonies with a high-production sheen; a contrast to the corroded bedroom recordings that have fomented a fervent cult following over the past decade.
The outfit now consists of reclusive pop surrealist Ariel Pink (vocals) alongside Tim Koh (bass/vocals), Kenny Gilmore (guitar/vocals) and Aaron Sperske (drums/vocals).

Margaret Cho records with Ben Lee, Tegan and Sara and more
“I want to create a new genre of music that is hilarious but also seriously good, so I turned to some of my music heroes to help me out,” says Margaret Cho in reference to her forthcoming album Cho-Dependent. “I have wanted to make an album like this forever. I love comedy music!”
The lyrics on Cho Dependent, which tackle issues of sex, drugs, rock & roll – and lice, may be laugh-inducing, but Cho has made no compromises when it comes to the quality of the songwriting and production. After “My Puss,” a hilarious rap parody Cho recorded impromptu-style with friends, became a surprise YouTube hit, Cho began to integrate more comedy music into her live stand-up shows. With Cho Dependent, her first comedy music album, Cho got a chance to hone her craft with some of the top names in the business.
“Over the years of being an intense music geek I got to meet a lot of my heroes and I tricked them all into writing songs with me,” explains Cho. “Most comics want to be rock stars, and most rock stars want to be comics, so it was an easy exchange.”
“There are so many amazing people I got to work with on this album,” Cho continues, “Jon Brion, Fiona Apple, Tegan and Sara, Andrew Bird, Ani DiFranco, Garrison Starr, Meghan Toohey, Brendan Benson, Rachael Yamagata, Carl Newman, Grant Lee Phillips, Patty Griffin, Ben Lee, Kevin Barnes -- I still have to pinch myself!”
Conversely, the many collaborators on Cho Dependent seem to be equally excited about working with Cho. In a blog published on The Huffington Post, Australian indie-pop artist Ben Lee, said that working with her was “one of the most surprising and unexpected turns” in his career.
“When I heard Margaret was making her own music last year, I reached out to her and said I'd love to be involved,” reveals Lee, who co-wrote and produced several songs on the album. “The process of working with Margaret has been a complete revelation and joy for me. She started learning guitar at age 40 after seeing Madonna play guitar and thinking, ‘If that bitch can do it, it can't be that hard.’ It's this punk-rock enthusiasm that has informed every step of the writing and recording process.”
Canadian folk-rock duo Tegan and Sara, also blogged about their experiences recording with the taboo-busting funnywoman, whom they called “outrageously talented and funny.” Their Cho Dependent track, “Intervention,” was recorded over two days in Vancouver with producer Howard Redekopp, who’d just finished co-producing the girl’s sixth studio album, Sainthood.
“Imagine 10 hours of laughing, singing, eating, laughing, talking, eating and laughing and you might have a bit of a clearer picture of what our two days and nights were like,” writes T&S’s Tegan Quin. “The song itself turned out amazing. Margaret has a great voice and was so easy to work with. Definitely a budding musician!”
Ultimately Cho hopes to raise the bar for the genre as a whole – and get a little recognition for her contribution to the cause. Her motivations for this latter goal however are naturally as subversive as her humor. “I want to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and on Elvis Costello's Spectacle so I can talk all serious about my songwriting ‘process’ -- which is basically trying to figure out what rhymes with ‘dick.’”

Many of the songs on Cho Dependent will have a video directed by YouTube sensation Liam Kyle Sullivan. Cho and Sullivan previously collaborated on Cho’s 2008 Beautiful tour and on several online videos. Sullivan is best known for “Shoes,” a comedy music video and YouTube record-breaker, which has garnered over 34 million views.
To support the release of the album, Cho will be heading out on the road with her guitar in hand for a major nationwide US tour, which will kick off on August 26 and run thru December 12. The Cho Dependent shows will be a special evening of brand new stand up comedy, mixed with a few live performances of Cho’s comedy songs. Most dates will go on sale June 11. Check www.margaretcho.com for further info and for special VIP ticket packages.
The second season of Cho's hit Lifetime TV series Drop Dead Diva debuts June 6. When the show debuted in July/Aug 2009, it was the highest rated first season of an original Lifetime series since Army Wives in 2007, and the new season promises even more out of this world fun.

DC/AC tour to feature Dead Confederate & Alberta Cross
seriously, how can you not want to go see this show after looking at that flyer???
Athens, Georgia-based quintet Dead Confederate are extending their North American tour into the fall, adding co-headlining dates with New York-based roots rockers Alberta Cross. Dead Confederate are touring in support of their upcoming sophomore release Sugar, due on August 24th on TAO Recordings/Old Flame. Prior to the Alberta Cross dates, they'll be touring with Deer Tick and playing a Bumbershoot after party with Surfer Blood.
Sugar, recorded by John Agnello (The Hold Steady, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.), was shaped by touring with legends such as Dinosaur Jr. and Meat Puppets and gave Dead Confederate an increased appreciation for the early underground bands of the 80s and 90s that laid the foundation on which their sound is built. As a result, the record explores new styles beyond the aching, bleak psychedelia with which the band originally made their mark.
Dead Confederate is also sharing new music in exchange for an email address. Head over to DeadConfederate.com to download the appropriately titled track, "Giving It All Away" (featuring J. Mascis, of Dinosaur Jr.). Also at DeadConfederate.com is some fantastic in-studio footage with more new music!
